The Life of the Holy Physician The icon of Saint Luke the Surgeon (Archbishop of Simferopol and Crimea) depicts one of the most extraordinary modern saints of the Orthodox Church. Born Valentin Felixovich Voyno-Yasenetsky (1877–1961), he was a brilliant professor of medicine and a pioneer in regional anesthesia and purulent surgery. Despite living under a fiercely atheistic regime that persecuted the Church, he chose to be ordained as a priest and later consecrated as a bishop, famously operating on his patients while wearing his monastic robes and hanging an icon of the Mother of God in the operating room.
For his unyielding faith, Saint Luke spent a total of eleven years in brutal exile and imprisonment in Siberia. Through all his trials, he never stopped healing the sick, comforting the suffering, and defending the Christian faith.
