Saint Markella of Chios, also known as Agia Markella in Greek, is a revered Christian saint who lived on the Greek island of Chios. Saint Markella was born in the late 14th or early 15th century. She was raised in a devout Christian family but faced persecution from her pagan father. Markella fled to the forests of Chios to escape her father's advances and lived as a hermitess, dedicating herself to prayer and serving God. Legend has it that her father eventually found her hiding place and, in a fit of rage, he did her the greatest harm. Markella's body was thrown into the sea, but it was miraculously carried back to shore by angels. Saint Markella is revered for her purity, devotion, and the miraculous healings attributed to her intercession.
